When you first apply for the job, you might not succeed in getting it. It’s always a good idea to ask them to explain to you what prevented you from beating the other candidates. Perhaps they just glance at your application and saw something that made it easy to choose between you and another candidate. Don’t regard it as a failure, but recognize it as a chance to learn more.
