I. HOÀ HỢP CHỦ TỪ - ĐỘNG TỪ
• S số ít ➢ V số ít.
• S số nhiều ➢ V số nhiều.
EXAMPLE 1
- The first bridge to be built with electric lights (was / were) the Brooklyn Bridge.
- The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies and International Affairs (was / were) established in May 1985.
The plural noun comes between the S and the V, and you may have mistaken that word for the true S.
EXAMPLE 2
Minerals in seawater exists in the same proportions in all of the oceans of the world.
A. in
B. exists
C. proportions
D. of the
The singular noun “seawater” comes between the S and the V, and you may have mistaken that word for
the true S “minerals”.
EXAMPLE 3
Bowling, one of the most popular indoor sports, are popular all over the United States and in other
countries.

B. most popular
C. are
D. other
The S of the sentence is “bowling”, not “sports”.

1. Câu có 2 S nối với nhau bởi “and” ➢ V số nhiều
• The chemistry lab and the physics lab are open to current university students, faculty, and staff.
2. S số ít đi với các cụm bổ trợ như: as well as, along with, together with, accompanied by,… + V số ít
• The mayor, along with the city council, is involved in setting municipal policy.
• Together with his friends, Mark has participated in many physical trainings.

3. Một số từ kết thúc bởi -s nhưng là danh từ số ít
• Economics is the science that deals with the production, allocation, and use of goods and services.
• The news was so shocking that it was hard for Linda to absorb.
4. Các danh từ số nhiều đặc biệt (teeth, children, men,...) không kết thúc bởi -s nhưng đi với V số
nhiều
• Married women were not allowed to leave the home of their husband without permission in ancient
times.
• Swollen feet have many minor and temporary causes.
EXAMPLE
• Ethics (is / are) the study of moral duties, principles, and values.
• Teeth (is / are) covered with a hard substance called enamel.
5. Chủ ngữ có “each” hoặc “every” + V số ít
• Each US State has its own constitution and supreme court.
• Each of the representatives was questioned by a live audience of 100 voters in separate sessions
throughout the day.
• Everyone wants to be a hero, until it's time to be a hero.
• Every single child is special in their own unique way.
EXAMPLE
• Every rose (has / have) its thorns.

6. Khi mệnh đề bắt đầu bằng chủ ngữ giả “There”, V số ít hay nhiều phụ thuộc vào chủ từ ngữ pháp

7. V của mệnh đề quan hệ phụ thuộc vào danh từ mà đại từ quan hệ thay thế
